Shirey, Orville C. Americans: The Story of the 442nd Combat Team. Washington: Infantry Journal Press, December, 1946. First Edition Hardcover no Dustjacket, with mylar cover. 151 pages. Measures 8.75" x 11.25". Also includes an original vintage photograph of the 442nd troops standing with flags and holding riles in a field. Black and White Silver Gelatin Photograph. Photographs in the book are in black and white, maps in vibrant color. Book details, in text, photographs and illustrations, the history and brave actions of the 442nd Combat Team. From the introduction by the author: "The record of these men speaks for itself. The Nisei, as indivudals and as a unit, rank with the greatest soldiers who ever served their country in time of war." A majority of the book deals with combat operations including the Rome-Arno Campaign, the Battle of Bruyeres, the Champagne Campaign, the Po Valley Campaign, and D-Day in Southern France. Also included Is a list of the total number of Awards, Battle honors, and a full list of officers and personnel with awards and decorations listed by their names. Also included are photos of marches in Washington D.C., machine gunners in defensive positions, riflemen moving through shelled areas as the attack to relieve "lost battalion" jumps off the ledge. Illustrations also depict key moments including: Lt. Daniel K. Inouye raking the second gun with fire from his tommy gun, forcing the crew to surrender, wire crew working day and night to keep the lines in, men pulling themselves up by low-growing shrubs, and several maps of Italy and France. Pages and Cover are very clean and textblock is tight. In very good condition.
