About This Item

Naval Institute Press, 1980-01-01. Hardcover. Very Good+/Very Good. Hardcover, 1981 8th Impression Naval institute Press 283 pages. Very Good+, in a VG DJ. Green cloth boards with gilt spine titles - corners sharp. Minor shelf/edge wear to DJ - now in mylar. No previous owner markings - all pages are clean and crisp. Fascinating book is the result of the author’s project of building a detailed museum model of the HMS Victory. (which is still on display in the Science Museum at South Kensington) Detailed descriptions help historians visualize certain tasks that sailors had to perform to keep a ship like this in good fighting trim. 76 excellent photographs, mostly of the HMS Victory, along with a few photos of other sailing warships that have been preserved. There are 12 plan drawings, many of which are fold outs, at 1/196 scale of the HMS Victory. Four pages about the history of the ship and her design start the ball rolling. Two main sections comprise the text of the book with 137 pages for the hull and 116 pages for the rigging. There are chapters for each deck, and six more chapters for each part of the rigging. This book also has almost 200 line drawings. If you enjoy Jack Aubrey, here is what he had to deal with in detail. Highly recommended. ISBN-0870210777. LOC SSS-15
