About This Item

Paris, Robert Estienne, 1548. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - * "Extremely rare edition of this comedy of Terence, intended for schoolboys by Charles Estienne ; it was issued in 1541 and frequently reprinted : all editions are very rare. The comedy is divided into short scenes, each printed separetely, and followed first by a 'contructio' (a dissection of the scene into its component phrases and expressions) and then by 'scholia' (running comments). The high popularity of Charles Estienne's edition was undoubtedly due primarily to his 'constructio', which contained a complete literal, word-for-word, French translation of the comedy." (Schreiber, The Estiennes 99.) Hinges cracked at the head of the spine of the binding. A fool has written the date in red ink on the title page. We can congratulate ourselves that he did not get the date wrong... Otherwise a good copy. - -.
