About This Item
Boston: Prince Society, 1869; 1869; 1874. "Being a collection of pamphlets and official papers issued during the period between the overthrow of the Andros government and the establishment of the second charter of Massachusetts; with notes and a memoir of Sir Edmund Andros." Andros was appointed Governor of the Dominion of New England in 1686. His arbitrary insistence on inserting the Church of England into a Puritan society resulted in an uprising against him in 1689. Tradition has him fleeing captivity disguised as a woman. DAB gives a more balanced account: "His personality has been little understood because attention has always been focused on the policies of his administration which were distasteful to the theocrats... He was essentially a soldier, and where soldierly qualities were needed his rule was excellent." See Howes A 271. This is a mixed set, volume III being in a different binding than the first two. Volumes I and II are a limited edition of 150 copies, bound in half brown morocco over boards, and are in very good condition. Volume III is bound in half red calf over marbled boards. Front hinge cracked, backstrip worn. Three volumes. Three volumes, 21.5 cm. liv, 214, (1); xxxiv, (1), 345, (1); xv, 257 pp.
