About This Item
Synopsis
Anna Karenina is a novel by Leo Tolstoy, published in 1877. The story is set in 19th-century Russia and follows the life of Anna Karenina, a married woman who embarks on an affair with the wealthy Count Vronsky. As their affair becomes more passionate, Anna must grapple with the societal norms and expectations of her time, which view infidelity as a serious transgression. The novel explores themes of love, desire, societal expectations, and the consequences of our actions. It is considered one of the greatest works of literature and a masterpiece of realist fiction. The long novel was first serialized in the Russian periodical Ruskii Vestnik from 1873 to 1877, and first appeared in book form in 1878.
