British mountaineer Sir Christian John Storey Bonington's (1934 - ) career includes 19 expeditions to the Himalayas. In 1970 Bonington led the first team to ascent the south face of Annapurna; this memoir is an account of the climb. The volume is dedicated to Ian Clough who lost his life on the expedition. This legendary climb is a first attempt at scaling, literally a wall, steep rock and ice at an extreme altitude. Out of it's success and out of this book, the last 30 years of mountaineering has benefitted much. Illustrated w/color photos the last being is a fold-out schematic of where fixed ropes were laid.
