About This Item

EB: Rodwell and Martin. Very Good. 1820. Hardcover. Leather. 8vo. Rodwell & Martin, London, UK. 1820. Two Volumes. Xxiv, 623 pgs; xvi, 631 pgs. First Edition/First Printing. Bound in full calf leather cloth boards with red spine labels and raised bands present to the spine. Boards have light shelf-wear present to the extremities. Previous owner's bookplate present to the front pastedown. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. First edition of William Brown's (1766 1835) major work, an extensive account of Jewish traditions and customs based on the Old Testament, Josephus Flavius and Maimonides. Brown himself was a Scottish Presbyterian, but his in-depth study of Judaism has resulted in what Lowndes describes in the words of T. H. Hornes as "the most elaborate system of Jewish antiquity extant in the English language". The first volume is devoted to the rites of the Jewish religion with a detailed treatise on the construction of the temple and the tabernacle, the priesthood, the holy feasts and the construction of the synagogue after the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem. The second volume deals with the different faiths, the laws, marriage, housing, or clothing. The folding board at the beginning shows a floor plan of the temple in Jerusalem. EB; Complete .
