About This Item

London: G. kershaw & Son, 1852. Hardcover. Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, green cloth boards ornately decorated in gilt on spine. Exterior shows considerable wear with edge and corner bumps, spotting and soiling, and tears to the cloth on spine edges and hinge. Internal binding is in better shape with no hinge cracks noted at boards. The worst issue being that all page sections are uncut and the original owner separated some of these by hand which caused some ugly tears along the page edges. Most of the pages are still uncut, mainly along the top. Pages are tone due to age and foxing is present, though mainly limited to the end pages and frontispiece. Hinge is pulled to where you could see the webbing at page 432/433 but other areas are tight. Some of the pages in the rear of the book (starting at 537) have a crease in the upper outside corner which appears to be from when the book was bound. What makes this copy unique was who the owner was: the front end page contains the signature which reads "Tho. H. Looker - USN" and his last name also appears on the title page. This book belonged to Commodore Thomas Henry Looker (1829-1910) - Midshipmen, Purser, Pay Director, Assistant to Secretary of the Navy, Paymaster General, etc. his signature can be found in the Library of Congress Abraham Lincoln papers, series 1. He served at the Mexican war and Civil War and was a personal friend President Rutherford B. Hayes. The front end page also shows faint indentations where something was written in pencil and then later erased, this is likely a previous bookstore price. Title page states "A New and Complete Edition".

Synopsis

The Arabian Nights Entertainments was introduced to Europe in a French translation by Antoine Galland in 1704, and rapidly attained a unique popularity.  A more accurate version, corrected from the Arabic, with a style admirably direct, easy, and simple, was published by Dr. Jonathan Scott in 1811.

Terms of Sale

Yesterday's Book Shop (Member IOBA)

Purchases will ship by US Media Mail or Priority Mail (if buyer selects) and higher priced items may have insured placed on the order and will typically ship within one business day. Additional postage may be required for multiple volume books or books weighing over 5 lbs., but only in unusual cases. Insurance is available upon request though we normally place insurance on any item of $75 or higher at no additional cost to the buyer. Non-US sales will ship by First Class International or Global Priority. Additional postage may be required for multiple volume books or books weighing over 4 lbs.

We always take extra care in packaging and shipping. Books are typically wrapped in packing paper or bubblewrap before packaged in a sturdt shipping box. All orders, even those shipped by US Media Mail, will be given a USPS tracking number which will be sent to the buyer so they will know when to expect arrival. Please let us know if there is a book with incorrect or missing photos. We recently moved the inventory to Biblio and a title or two may have had issues with the photos being transferred over.

Yesterday's Book shop is owned and operated by a disabled veteran. Due to my limitations, I often have to rely on speech-to-text software to list the books. If the description has typos ("and pages" instead of "end pages", pace downs instead of pastedowns, guilt instead of gilt, etc,) PLEASE let me know so I can correct the listing. The software spells words by phonetics and can make errors that I may not catch.

There is a 30 day money back guarantee if the book arrives damaged or is not as described. Please contact us prior if you have any issues with your purchases and we will make sure you are taken care of.

About Yesterday's Book Shop (Member IOBA)

Yesterday's Book Shop is an independent, family-owned establishment. The store first opened in 1966 under the name Collector's Corner and was located in Western Maryland. The Collector's Corner dealt mainly in books but also sold stamps and assorted ephemera. In 1975 the name was changed to Yesterday's Book Shop when the store only offered books and printed matter. In the early 2000s the brick and mortar store was closed and now we only sell online.

All of the book pictures were taken at the time the book was listed and we never use generic or stock photos in any listing. If you would like additional photos or information on any listing please let us know and we will be more than happy to comply.
