About This Item

London: Methuen & Co Ltd, 1951. First British Edition. Cloth. Near Fine/Very Good. Small 8vo (7 1/2" x 5"), pale green cloth with gold title on spine, typographic dust jacket (unclipped) archival mylar-protected, 63, [64] pages. Jean Anouilh [pron.: An-ouil or A-nouil & not "anwi"] (1910 - 1987) was a prominent French playwrite and screenwriter whose work ranged from sophisticated drama to absurdist farce. He is well known for Antigone (1944)--based on Sophocles' drama--which attacked the Nazified Vichy government. One of France's most prolific and important dramatists, his themes often dealt with renouncing reality for dreams, and maintaining integrity in a world of moral compromise. VERY GOOD + CONDITION: tight, bright, clean copy in a bright, clean dj (unclipped) with edge wear (mainly at top and bottom of spine and along its edges) with a 1/2" clean cut at its top middle. Previous owners' names on front endpapers.
