A compelling narrative or life in nineteenth-century Ireland, which explores the themes of goodness, morality, and duty. Written by noted nineteenth-century Irish author, William Carleton. Carleton is best known for his Traits and Stories of the Irish Peasantry (1830), which is a collection of sketches of the stereotypical Irishman and woman. The first edition of this scarce work. Containing a frontispiece illustrated in colour by C. Graf. Including an ink inscription from a previous owner to the front pastedown, dated 1848. In contemporary full cloth binding. Externally, sound, with shelf wear to the boards and bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Some marks to the boards. Previous owner's ink signature to the front pastedown. Internally, front hinge is strained, remaining binding is firm. A few spots to the first and last few pages, and the odd spot throughout. Pages are very lightly age-toned. Good
