About This Item

Lewes, Sussex: Book Guild, 1994. Fine/NrF. First edition, first printing in d/w not price clipped. PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, on front endpaper. Inscription reads, 'To ---- -------/With my best wishes/H F Wissa/3.1.98'. Profusely illustrated with photographs. A well-researched and authoritative history of Egypt. It is enhanced and given a personal perspective via the parallel history of the author's family during the last hundred years. Central to the history is Esther Wissa, the author's powerful and crusading mother (1895-1990). She pioneered the education and emancipation of women. She was an Egyptian Christian feminist, who revolted against British colonialisation in 1919. In 1923 she established, with other women, the Egyptian Feminist Union which was affiliated to The International Alliance of Women For Suffrage. After the death of his mother, he decided to write her story and that of his family - a family that had, for nearly a century, been actively involved in Egypt's financial, political and social development. With Appendices, Bibliography and Index. D/w has slight sunning to spine; else a fine copy, in a near fine d/w, of a SCARCE first edition, first printing, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. D/w now protected in a detachable, non-adhesive, clear sheaf. HEAVY PLEASE CONTACT US ABOUT POSTAGE. WILL BE KEPT AT COST.. Presentation Copy Inscribed And Signed By Author.
