Sun-fading to the maroon cloth at the outer edges of the covers; small cloth tears at 3 of the corners; light fraying to the top and bottom edges of the spine; small, dark stain spot at the outer edge of the front cover and on the left edge of the back cover. Tight binding. No cracks. No loose pages. The text pages are in very good condition - clean with only a small, light stain and foxing at the upper-outer corner of 2 front end papers...no other foxing or staining found; name/address/date (1869) written in pencil on a front end paper; there are a few characters/numbers written in pencil at the top-left corner of the front pastedown and at the top-right corner of a rear end paper...no other writing found. There are a couple small, light stains on the text block. Overall the book is in very good condition.

Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
