Original taupe cloth stamped in gilt on front cover and spine, and in blind on rear cover. Near fine with some uneven toning and light bubbling to cloth. Clean and complete internally save for the ownership signatures of John Hume and O. Harvey on the front flyleaf. Second issue of this Civil War era almanac and business directory from Bancroft, first published in 1862. In unusually clean condition for this cheaply produced volume and also quite interesting for its provenance. John Hume was the brother of western detective and lawman, James B. Hume, famous for his bringing of the notorious outlaw and stage coach robber, Black Bart, to justice. At the time of this publication, John served as District Attorney in El Dorado County, his salary of $2,000 being noted in the almanac. Engraving, portrait print by Robert Thew of Frances Anne "Fanny" Kemble Butler (1809-1893) in costume as Isabella in William Shakespeare's Measure for Measure. The sheet measures 10 in x 7 ¼ in, with a vignette-decorated border of scenes from the play around an oval image, showing Fanny Kemble Butler in a full-figure pose. Once an illustration in a book, now disbound, with original tissue guard still attached, now torn. Slight chipping of the upper right-hand corner of the sheet, with no image loss.

Randolph B. Marcy was a career soldier (he graduated from West Point in 1832) at a time when the career would be likely to involve exploration. In the 1840s, part of his role was the escorting of emigrant wagon trains through Oklahoma and Texas, and mapping their routes. In 1857, he was involved in the expedition against the Mormons in Utah, leading his men in a forced march through the Rocky Mountains in winter. In 1852, he was commander of an expedition to find the headwaters of the Red River. All this experience meant that he was the ideal author for a book on how to survive in the wilderness.
