About This Item

Boston: constructed by the author, 1919. Ephemera. Pp.1-92 are covered with neatly clipped and laid-down news stories from The Boston Traveller daily, in which Brown had a regular column --or plenty of exposure at any rate. Pieces run consecutively January into June. The album is of quality manufacture with a leather spine tooled gilt, alphabetical tabs preceeding the numbered pages (140 all told), and a careful owner with a pot of good glue and considerable dexterity. The backstrip leather is mildly abraded along joints, a handwritten label is taped to cover, and front endsheet is very foxed. A generally sound clean item that could have been put together clumsily. Several columns are devoted to the question of trans-Atlantic flight; "shouldn't be more dangerous than wartime combat" is Brown's summation. Contents a melange of post-war advances in aerial weaponry, grim aerial photos (of damage at Verdun, etc.), increase of speed, passenger carriage, on & on. Transatlantic flight imagined. Aircraft rivalry between UK and US.
