About This Item

Writers Club Press, 2000. Softcover. Fine. Glossy illustrated softcovers. 420 pp. with bibliography. Fine. The first complete acount of the Boston Red Sox' last championship of the 20th century when in 1918 they won an unprecedented fifth World Series. During that summer, the Great War cast its shadow over baseball as drafts and enlistments wreaked havoc with every team's roster; play rs and owners fought bitterly over contracts and revenues, ballparks were infested with gamblers, and the Red Sox and Cubs almost called off the Series. It was also the year Babe Ruth degan his historic transformation from pitching ace to the game's greatest slugger.
