London: Charles Knight, 1836. Second Edition. Composed of letters written by the author to her mother and friends in England, the Backwoods includes much useful and interesting information on home-making under pioneer conditions, pioneer recipes for making maple sugar, vinegar, &c. Mrs. Traill, who emigrated to Canada with her husband, a lieutenant in the 21st Fusiliers, also gives an account of her journey and settlement near Rice Lake, Upper Canada, August 1832-May 1835. In his Bookplates of Leslie Victor Smith (1947), William Colgate suggests that among Canadian bookplate artists "probably no one is more widely recognized for the fine quality of his work than Leslie Victor Smith".
