Kelley] The original Baker Guide to Fine Furniture was published in 1940 under the direction of Hollis S. Baker, Sr. As a collector, interested in reproducing fine furniture, he had the foresight to bring from small cabinet shops abroad craftsmen who were masters of the hand skills needed to recreate such designs. These masters trained the many who carry on this tradition of skilled handcraftsmanship today. The present volume, this is the eighth edition, contains much new material plus revisions of the text of previous editions The majority of the illustrations are of items currently being reproduced by the Baker Furniture Company. It is our hope that you will enjoy sharing with us the romance of furniture design through the ages, will find suggestions for what to look for in any fine furniture: and will be guided in your selection of pieces that will add joy to your everyday living and prove their worthiness as investments in the years ahead. The Baker Guide to Fine Furniture is a miniature history of furniture development and the personal expression of a connoisseur, our editor. Highlighting those periods of significant furniture design, the book delineates those principles and disciplines to which he has been most dedicated. Our firm's approach to the making of fine furniture flourished for many years under the direction of Frank VanSteenberg, Sr. In this, his 50th year of association with Baker, it is to him that this new publication is dedicated.
