About This Item
London: Hogarth Press, 1954. 1st Edition 2nd Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/Good+ for age. Blue and white decorated boards, gilt-lettered blue cloth spine, slight rub by top fr. spine otherwise clean and unworn. 59 pp.; small sig. top fr. end-paper, very faint tanning to end-gutter regions off-set from jacket wraparounds, otherwise clean, tight and unmarked. Illustrated jacket generally clean but chips to sp. ends and, fairly large, to bottom back edge, slight chips also top back edge and fr. joint, with internally closed tear, barely visible, across centre sp., will add protective sleeve when ordered. 1st issued in September this is the 1st, October, reprint, originally published in the Cornhill magazine. As a Japanese prisoner of war, the author became close friends with another prisoner and this is primarily a quite moving account of this friend's relationship with the effective camp commandant. Hara, a brutal but fascinating man, and his reconciliation with him before his execution for war-crimes. In retrospect it reads as somewhat racist but is an insightful and generous story. One of the author's earlier works. 12.5 cm x 19 cm
