About This Item

New York: A. L. Burt Company, 1927. First Edition Thus. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Very Good/Good+. 12mo. Pp. 324, 4 of publisher advertising. Green linen textured cloth, titles stamped in gilt on the cover and spine. In the two-color illustrated dust jacket, verso printed with Burt's Popular Copyright Fiction catalog. Spine ends rubbed. Leaf edges lightly age toned. Endpaper ink inscription, Christmas 1928. Jacket edges chipped, spine color faded as usual. A classic crime mystery and courtroom drama adapted by Frances Noyes Hart (1890-1943) from the Hall-Mills double murder case, the most sensational newspaper drama of the era until eclipsed by the Lindbergh kidnapping. (Trial attendees included Damon Runyon, Mary Roberts Rinehart, H. L. Mencken, and Billy Sunday.) Hart's mystery helped create the courtroom genre, and resides on the Haycraft Queen Cornerstone checklist. The basis for the 1929 movie directed by Monta Bell.

Published by arrangement with Doubleday, Doran & Co., utilizing the same dust jacket illustration - a sinister figure in top hat with walking stick reading a banner newspaper headline. HUBIN, p. 195. Dust jacket preserved in a removable clear archival sleeve.
