1594 Geneva English BIBLE Barker Old/New Testament Grashop Puritans & Pilgrims

An exceedingly rare 16th-century Geneva Bible compete with Old and New Testaments, Grashop's Bible Chart, and The Address to the Christian Reader. The Geneva version was translated into English by William Whittingham, Anthony Gilby, and Thomas Sampson. This 1594 printing is exceedingly rare and is printed in double-column, black letter type with verse numbers (The Geneva Bible was the first English Bible to use verse numbers). Each page is filled with references and notes in the margins.

Even after the 1611 King James English Bible was published, the Geneva Bible would still be popular edition of the Puritans into the mid-17th-century.

The Church of England did not recognize the Geneva Bible as canon and thus had no official status in the English Church; however, all readers of the Geneva Bible were given aid in understanding scripture through the help of T. Grashop's Bible Chart which advises the reader on how to approach the biblical text. This edition, like other Barker versions, includes the additions of R.F. Herrey and Grashop.

1534 1ed Apian Instrumentum Astronomy Mathematics Alchemy Durer ART Trigonometry
Peter Apian was a 16th-century humanist who is remembered for his studies in astronomy and mathematics. One of his best known works was his 1534 mathematics treatise 'Instrumentum Primi Mobilis'. This book was Apian's studies in trigonometry, and, according to Tomash & Williams,
"Apian published a table of sines that, for the first time, was based on a circle with a radius of a power of ten, in this case one hundred thousand. The values of the functions were thus decimal and were easily adapted to any situation in which the defining circle was a decimal power."
This 1534 first edition is exceedingly rare and valuable. It contains the expected sine charts as well as numerous woodcut illustrations depicting protractor and arc readings. Note that this incredible work includes the original title page, which features a woodcut after Albrecht Durer.

1697 ART Albrecht DURER Human Anatomy Proportion Drawing Illustrated ENGLISH

Albrecht Durer was a famous 15th-century painter and humanist. His engravings have become some of the most desirable Renaissance illustrations and have been repeatedly analyzed and studied by landscape and human-form artists. One of Durer's best written works was his instructional treatise on human proportion. This work provided direction on how to accurate draw the human form, both male and female figures and all parts of the body. "On Human Proportion" was one of the leading works of its kind even into the 18th-century.

This 1697 edition of Durer's "Human Proportion" was published in London and features 19 impressive full-page engravings, each with dozens of figures and examples. This particular edition is exceedingly rare! A must have!

1656 HEALTH 1ed Drinking Water in 1600s England BEER WINE Opium Medicine Short

Richard Short's "Of Drinking Water" is a rare, 17th-century treatise on health and well-being in 1600s England. Published in 1656, Short's popular work was written at a time when the majority of drinking water was not safe for most people and was distrusted as a regular drink (Pope). In fact, one of the chapters found in this treatise was called "That our English beer is better then [sic] water". This chapter was not on the taste and preference of the two beverages, but rather on the safety of consuming one over the other. Other topics considered by Short included:
· Elderly and children are to avoid drinking water
· The virtues of drinking English beer
o "experience that beer is healthful"
· Consuming opium and poppy along with water
· That wine is absolutely better than water
· Effects of water on heart palpitations, gout, and dropsy

1781 1ed Captain James Cook Voyage Australia Zealand Hawaii Pacific MAP Rickman"Remember, the greater the opportunity, the fewer are those who see it." – James Cook James Cook was an 18th-century British explorer known for these three major world voyages. The third Pacific voyage, which began in 1776, took Cook and his crew around New Zealand and Hawaii. On this trip, Cook became well acquainted with the King of Hawaii, Kalani-opu'u. After spending time in the South Pacific, Cook also took his ship northward to the Aleutian Islands reaching to the Arctic Circle. Cook eventually died upon his return to Hawaii, after angering the King of Hawaii. According to Hill, who does not note this rare Dublin edition, states:"This anonymous journal, of Captain Cook's third voyage, was once believed to have been written by John Ledyard, who had actually made liberal use of Lieutenant Rickman's account; hence the confusion. This narrative anticipated the government's authorized account by two years. All the… Read More

1499 Mantuanus Poetry + 1507 Satires of Persius Post-Incunable Satyrae ROME Roce

Along with Juvenal, Persius was one of the greatest 1st century Roman satirists. His works consisted of elements of stoicism and were greatly influenced by Horace and Juvenal, in fact the satires of both Juvenal and Persius are often found published together. In his 'Satires', Persius sought a few major philosophical ideas:
·
important questions to ask the gods
·
the meaning of life
·
the importance of gaining knowledge
·
freedom through Stoicism
·
the proper use of money

This 1507 post-incunable printing of Persius's 'Satyrae' was published in Paris by Jean Barbier and Denis Roce. This edition was edited by Giovanni Britannico, a 15th-century grammarian who is best known for his edition of Persius.

This book is bound with another early Roce printing of Baptista Mantuanus poetry. Mantuanus was a Carmelite poet whose 15th-century works were influential during the Protestant… Read More

1744 RAREST George Anson Voyage to South-Seas South America Brazil Peru Chile

George Anson was an 18th-century British Navy admiral who is noted for his important world voyage in which he circumnavigated the globe. This voyage, beginning in 1740, was initiated in order to disrupt Spain and their acquisitions from the Pacific – even though the squadron saw certain danger.
"Anson's voyage is remembered as a classic tale of endurance and leadership in the face of fearful disasters" (Rodger, 239)
He saw substantial victory by capturing Spanish ships carrying pieces of eight, silver, and other treasure; thus, allowing Anson to return home a very rich sailor. This voyage took Anson and company into South America and home by way of China – a true world voyage!

Authorship of this work is held with some ambiguity. According to the DNB and Sabin,
"A claim was made that the work was written, not by Mr. Walter, but by Mr. Benjamin Robins. This has never been substantiated except by mere assertion; and… Read More

1856 1ed Narrative of Expedition American Squadron Perry Hawkes JAPAN China MAPS

First and only complete edition of Commodore Perry's Japan Expedition!

Matthew Perry was one of the most important American Naval officers during the 19th-century. While he was notable for his involvement in the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War, his most famous accomplishment came as the leader of a voyage to Japan beginning in 1852 aboard the East India Squadron. This series of short visits sought to pursue Japanese trade treaties, but Perry and his crew discovered much more – Japanese and Chinese cultures, politics, coal mining and agriculture, as well as attempts at occupation of Formosa. While many events came from this expedition, according to Hill,
"the most important result was that the visit contributed to the collapse of the feudal regime and to the modernization of Japan"

The events of this expedition were recorded by Perry and Francis Hawks in the 1856 account "Narrative of the Expedition of an… Read More

Description:
London [Amsterdam]: Imprinted by the Deputies of Christopher Barker,, 1599. A handsome Puritan bible A Bible probably printed for the use of English puritans in the Low Countries in the early 17th century. The metrical psalms are included, with a separate title and register. The Geneva version, translated by William Whittingham and other Marian exiles, went through more than 70 editions between 1560 and 1640. Although folio versions were produced for pulpit use, this was primarily a household Bible, typically printed as here in small, manageable quartos. Geneva Bibles with 1599 imprints have a complex bibliographical history. Herbert identifies at least eight distinct editions, and notes that "the nominal date, 1599, is probably untrue in almost every case; they were apparently published at different times in Amsterdam and Dort and adopted by Barker" (p. 115).
