T. P. Issar ( - 2004) was the author of highly-lauded books on the architectural heritage of Bangalore and Mysore cities--THE CITY BEAUTIFUL and THE ROYAL CITY. Issar, ever an admirer of Bangalore's blossoms, was hesitant to embark on BLOSSOMS OF BANGALORE because of his admitted "floral illiteracy". It needed a little goading before he started work on a book which, he hoped, would improve his own knowledge of the flowering trees of Bangalore and bring out the "poet-painter's vision" which put them there: a book which would delight the eye besides being a handy reference volume for the non-botanist "florophile". He wanted people to be on "first-name terms" with at least a few of the tree-blossoms which bring them so much joy--articulated or just felt. An important purpose of the book was to impress on the citizen and the future administrators and planners of the City the concept and value of the unique culture of bio-aesthetic planning which was developed in Bangalore, so that "this created aesthetics is kept and renewed with care and pride". T. P. ISSAR was an officer of the Indian Administrative Service for over 30 years, and was the former chief secretary for the Indian State of Karnataka. He chaired the Bangalore Urban Art Commission from its inception in 1976.

This plate is from the second edition, published in 1856, distinct for the colored backgrounds. They are also a little different in that one species is pictured rather than a grouping of birds. This work was done to make Audubon's prints, highly in demand, more affordable for the general public. These hand colored lithographs were printed by J. T. Bowen. Showing the male on a branch of Ipomea.

No dust jacket as issued or missing. Sewn binding. Boards and spine are green cloth, lettering is gilt on spine and front. Back cover has slightly bent corners, some edge wear and minor marks from adjacent book on shelf, but no rips or stains. Spine has some edge wear all four sides but no rips, is clean and quite bright, has a few small creases top and bottom. Front cover is same as back cover with a few marks from what looks like black sealing wax. Page edges are tinted, as issued, slightly sunned. Binding is a bit loose. Inside front and back covers have a bit of age darkening, also ink stamp “Property of the B.C. Mountaineering Club”. On ffep is attached the Rules of the B.C.
