About This Item
London & Sydney: Collins, 1953. Hardback small octavo, dustjacket, good condition (in good dustjacket), blue cloth cover (spine ends little worn), some edge tears jacket, edges lightly foxed, some tape marks endpapers, pages lightly toned, autograph (author's written name). 143 pp. George Mackaness presents an entertaining gallery of celebrated and notorious early settlers: governors and their wives, convicts, rogues, vagabonds. Many of these 35 short essays were originally published in the 'Sydney Morning Herald'. The author makes good use of unpublished manuscripts to resurrect some of the picturesque characters and romantic incidents of the early white settlers.
