About This Item

UK,24mo HB minus dw/dj,1st edn.VG++.No owner inscrptn.Bright and clean, colour, pictorial illustrated,paper-covered card boards and immaculate plain white endpapers; with minimal shelf-wear and rubbing to edges and corners, and slightly sunned spine/backstrip as usual/ normal.Top+fore-edges slightly aged, but generally clean; contents bright, tight and clean.UK,24mo (approx 5.5" tall x 4.5" wide) HB,minus dw/dj,1st edn,3-256pp includes title page,an introduction, profuse b/w contemporary photographs and 3 indices to rear. The development of the bomber aircraft and its associated weapons, conventional and nuclear, has exerted an increasing influence on all our lives over the past half century (then 1964).But forgetting for a moment the enormous destructive power of the bombs it carries, the present-day bomber is of absorbing technical interest as the culminating point of a 50 year-long process of engineering experiment and achievement. It is difficult to think of any specialised branch of technology on which as much money and brain power has been expended for as long and intensive a period as on the engineering development of the bomber aircraft, its weapons and ancillary equipment.Excellent books have appeared recently on the history, analysis and achievements of air bombing, but none concentrates on the entire technical evolution of the carrying vehicle itself in all the major air forces. That is the aim of this little book, which closely follows the pattern of the previously published 'Fighter Aircraft Pocketbook'. Together, these volumes give a graphic review of the growth of the two main tools of modern air power. The small size of this book has again necessitated a restriction in the number of aeroplanes described. The first bombing aeroplanes were in fact general purpose aircraft used incidentally for bombing, and receive scant attention here.Similarly, naval aircraft are ignored almost completely, though the pin-point dive bombing technique, for example, was developed intensively by naval aircraft long before the Stukas came into service. Tactical bomb delivery today (1964) is undertaken extensively by fighter or fighter-bomber aircraft;these, however, are already covered in the previously mention companion volume and have no place in this present volume.A feature of this book is that aircraft are again described in chronological order of their introduction into squadron service or,in wartime, commencement of operational flying. One alteration, compared with the previous mentioned/published volume,is that each type in all its variants and modifications is covered under one basic heading, which disrupts the strict chronological sequence to some extent but makes for greater ease of reference.
