About This Item
Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1870. [1], v, [3], 256pp, [2]. With an engraved frontispiece and illustrations by Doyle, Leech and Crowquill. Attractively bound in contemporary gilt-tooled red morocco. Marbled end-papers, all edges gilt. Moderate wear to spine and very slight bumping to corners. Heavy spotting to front and rear end-papers, but none to text. Contemporary ink inscription R. D. Hamilton (?) to FEP. An eleventh edition of the hugely popular Bon Gaultier ballads, compiled under pseudonym by Scottish poets William Edmonstoune Ayton (1813-1865) and Sir Theodore Martin (1816-1909). First published in magazines in 1845, this copy is beautifully illustrated by Richard Doyle (1824-1883), John Leech (1817-1864) and Alfred Crowquill (i.e. Alfred Henry Forrester)(1804-1872). Doyle, the artist of the first cover of Punch magazine, was a longtime collaborator of Leech, who in turn enjoyed fame as the first illustrator of Dickens' A Christmas Carol (London, 1843). Divided into 'Spanish', 'American', and 'Miscellaneous', the collection of parodied ballads pokes fun at romantic, embellished verse. . Eleventh edition. 8vo.
