Collates as: a (2 leaves) + b (6 leaves) + B - Hh (in 6s). Title page with price "Five Shillings" now covered by pasted star and lozenge, apparently from the border of another Baskerville printing. Griffiths 1762/8. Bound with: Sternhold, Thomas and John Hopkins. The Whole Book of Psalms, Collected into English Metre. Birmingham: Printed by John Baskerville, 1762. [61] leaves. First Baskerville edition. ESTCT87252. Bound with: Brady, N[icholas] and N[ahum] Tate, A New Version of the Psalms of David, Fitted to the Tunes used in the Churches. Birmingham: Printed by John Baskerville. 1762. [52] leaves. First (and only) Baskerville edition. ESTCT107540. Marbled endpapers. Ffep with calligraphic inscription of Elizabeth Holcombe Wellington dated 1813 (two years prior to the Battle of Waterloo), a possible but unconfirmed relation of the Duke of Wellington. All page edges gilt. Bound in contemporary full maroon morocco with black central black onlay with divine monogram ("IHS"), winged angels and flames, and elaborately gilt-tooled borders and spine. Corners rounded. Three first edition Baskerville printings bound together in a spectacular contemporary English binding. Particularly unusual for containing both the "old" (Sternhold & Hopkins) Psalter and the "new" (Brady & Tate) Psalter. A unique book. Baskerville was an innovative printer and typographer whose works are considered to be some of the most beautiful printed in the English language. Tributes to his genius as a printer include the font that bears his name, as well as nods by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (The Hound of the Baskervilles) and Umberto Eco (who named the protagonist in The Name of the Rose William of Baskerville).
