In September of 1922, the organizers of the Hastings chess congress decided to hold a masters tournament which would pit two English masters against four of the best from the European continent. The participants of the double round robin were Alexander Alekhine, Efim Bogoljubov, Akiba Rubinstein, Siegbert Tarrasch, George Alan Thomas, and Frederick Yates. Alekhine managed to edge out superstar Rubinstein by half a point in the final, winning his most famous game ever against long time rival Bogoljubov, whereas Rubinstein struggled for over a hundred moves against Thomas only to come up short at the end. The 30 games are fully annotated by Alekhine, with some notes from The Field column added. A distant third and fourth was a tie, Bogoljubow and Thomas with 4 1/2 points. Fifth was the aging Tarrasch with 4 and Yates sixth with 2 1/2.

Eight players were invited to participate, including two very strong masters: Aron Nimzowitsch from Denmark, and Akiba Rubinstein from Poland. They met with six German chess masters that included Jacques Mieses, Friedrich Sämisch, Oscar Antze, Hans Duhm, Hermann Von Gottschall, and Walther Von Holzhausen. Games were played from August 9th to the 18th. Nimzowitsch won with a near perfect score of 6½ of 7, edging out Rubinstein by half a point. The prizes were awarded to the players at the Hotel Luisenhof. Seven years later, she moved to Tblisi, where she trained with Georgian grandmasters. Her shrewd, aggressive play won her great success early in her career. In 1961, she won the Women's Candidates Tournament. The following year, she challenged Elizaveta Bykova in the Women's World Championship and won. Her victory in this tournament brought her fame and made her a symbol of regional pride in Georgia. Nona Gaprindashvili went on to win the Women's World Championship four more times. Three of these matches were against Alla Kushnir, while the last was against Nana Alexandria, a fellow Georgian. 84 pages with 5 plates, diagrams and table. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 7 1/2") issued in light brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine with black flora design. Edited by Bernhard Kagan.(Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:5392) First edition.The tournament consisted of ten contestants. Efim Bogoljubov scored first a full point ahead of Akiba Rubinstein whom scored 6 points. and Rudolf Spielmann, Carl Ahues and Ernst Grunfeld tied for third each with a score of 5. The other contestants were Edgard Colle (4), Paul Johner, Paul M List and Friedrich Samisch (3 1/2), and Walther Von Holzhausen (2 1/2). This was Rubinstein's last tournament as a Berliner. He soon took up residence in Antwerp.Condition:Corners bumped and rubbed, some internal notations, spine heal rubbed through else a very good copy issued without jacket.

17 unpaginated Daily Bulletins with tables. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 1/4") 17 daily bulletins bound in stapled wrappers. First edition.There were a number of strong Argentinean tournaments in the 50's played at Mar del Plata. The first one in 1950 with others in 1953, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958 and 1959.In this tournament Miguel Najdorf and Julio Bolbochan tied for first with scores of 12 1/2. E Eliskases and R Sanguinetti shared third and fourth with 11 each. Jacobo Bolbochan captured a lone fifth with 10 points. There were a total of 17 contestants in this tournament.Condition:Light edge wear with some age toning to edges else a very good to fine copy.
