London: Nelson, 1968. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. Signed by Author. First UK Edition. SIGNED & INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR. 320 pages. Publisher's green rexine boards with gilt lettering to the spine and gilt vignette to the front board. A fine book in a VG+ dustwrapper which is unclipped, with slight rubbing to the edges and to the tip and tail of the spine. The spine and the left-hand edge of the front panel is faded to a lighter hue. Signed and inscribed by the Author to the title page. Details as how/when this book came to be signed can be provided. Black & white line drawings by the noted Illustrator EDWARD BAWDEN. Colour plates showing photos of prepared dishes. This is the first edition of Claudia Roden's ground-breaking book on Middle Eastern Food that revolutionised Western attitudes to the cuisines of the Middle East. Her intensely personal approach and her passionate appreciation of the dishes delighted readers, while she introduced them to a new world of foods, both exotic and wholesome. The book received great critical acclaim. The first edition is genuinely uncommon especially SIGNED in this sort of lovely, collector's condition.
