Ayer Co Pub, 1940. First Edition. Hardcover. Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" [10], 360 pages. 'A profane chronicle of literary endeavor and literary misdemeanor, with an informal index by Christopher Morley' (title page). Includes various anecdotes throughout its 18 chapters; particularly notable for those chapters related to anonymous works and mystery/detective fiction. Signed and inscribed by Starrett in blue ink on front free endpaper. Few small chips and nicks, slight staining and rubbing to jacket; stains to lower edges of several leaves (virtually the first 50 pages and a few leaves at rear; probably stained with red wine); slight internal browning to edges and endpapers; still a very serviceable copy of an intensely fascinating work. Sold 'as is'.Decorative Title Page in Red and Black.
