About This Item
Orono, Maine: Maine Folklife Center, 2011. First Edition . Audio Book (DVD). Fine. Northeast Folklore, Volume XLIV. viii, 346 pp. Trade paperback. Includes compact disc with ballads. This long lost work represents an important chapter in the history of folk song scholarship and sheds light on the thinking of Phillips Barry and his collaborators about folk songs, such as the origins, re-creations, textural patterns and singing styles of the songs. Barry laid important groundwork in folk song scholarship; this volume is a significant addition to his work, and includes Barry's extensive discussion of Child in the introduction. The many songs included in this volume, with musical notations, are a major contribution from Fannie Eckstorm and Mary Smyth's primary informants, especially Susie Carr Young, Annie V. Marston, J.P. A. Nesbitt, Horace Priest and Mrs. James McGill. Fine.
