Jacob K Javits (1904 â€" 1986) was an American lawyer and politician who represented New York in both houses of Congress He served in Congress from 1946 to 1854, as NY Attorney General 1954-1956 and in the US Senate from 1956 to 1981 He was considered one of the most liberal Republicans of his time and was an active supporter of civil rights legislation and became a vocal opponent of the Vietnam War For most of his election campaigns, he was a candidate of the NY Liberal Party, as well as the Republican Party He and his wife Marion were active in numerous political, literary and arts activities throughout their lives, both within New York and nationally
