About This Item

Cambridge, Massachusetts: Houghton Mifflin Company - The Riverside Press Cambridge, 1966. First Printing Stated . Hard Back. Very Good/No Dust Jacket. 5 3/4" x 8 1/4. 246 Pages. Tan cloth with white lettering to the spine and impressed into the front board the author's last name. Laid in (pasted) are two clippings. One with his photograph that appears to be somewhat of an obituary. The other clipping is a short description of the present book. In and out of these essays wanders The Man with the Calabash Pipe, a sardonic bachelor who refused to light his heater since a likeable mouse is in residence underneath it. His aged friend the Horned Husband Kachina Chief is another recurring character, a walking embodiment of an Indian sense of humor. But the important person is Oliver La Farge himself, talking as if with a friend about the things that concern him most. Contents in 47 Essays: The Man with the Calabash Pipe: I, New Mexico and Santa Fe, Understanding the City Different, Smokeless Cultures, The Man with the Calabash Pipe: II, On Courts - and the Crossbow, The Man with the Calabash Pipe: III, The Bird-Watchers' Wars, Growth of a City: An American Story, The Man with the Calabash Pipe: IV, Santa Fe vs. Santa Fe, Nine Cents and the Machine, Wearing Down the Gas Company, Some Folklore and a Monument, The Season of Fiesta, The Man with the Calabash Pipe: V, Criticism and the Experience of Writing, The Man with the Calabash Pipe: VI, Hearing from the Public, A Ban on Laughing Boy, Regional Writing - Is What?
