About This Item

MP3 Audio CD. Many of the stories included in this collection are still told and believed among native Americans living on the territory of Canada today. While the folktales included here are recorded and edited quite thoroughly by Cyrus Macmillan to fit in with the views and understanding of his time, they remain a highly valuable part of the heritage left behind by Canadian natives from long ago.

The poetry and mystical qualities of Canada?s past, particularly during and before the period of colonization, are rapidly disappearing today, as they have been since the time when Cyrus Macmillan decided to preserve these tales. Knowing they would eventually be lost to the descendants of the early Canadian settlers, he worked hard to preserve them in a form that would easily be understood by both modern Canadians of all races and cultures.

Canada?s romantic past is remembered through old customs and traditions despite the country?s rapid modernization, and its memory was fresh during the time that these Canadian Wonder Tales were written. These stories, which reflect the tumultuous past of the country, as well as the many traditions and battles that make up both the bitter and colorful side of Canada?s cultural heritage, were gathered from Indians, Canadian ?habitants,? fishermen and laborers who had told them throughout the ages, and repeated them to Macmillan as well.

They mostly comprise old Canadian fairy and folk tales that had been retold throughout the generations, speaking of both the coming of the first settlers and older happenings and legends whose original sources are shrouded in mystery.

You will thoroughly enjoy both the tales themselves and Cyrus Macmillan?s intriguing and elegant writing style. Also, these stories may not have been written with the modern 21st century readership in mind, but it certainly will appeal to anyone interested in Canada?s history and old traditions.
