Volume Two only of a two-volume set. 4to; original coarse brown cloth, lettered in gilt on spine and with gilt publisher's monogram to upper cover; pictorial dustwrapper; pp. xi + (iii) + [223-527], incl. index; contemporary monochrome maps and drawings; colour frontis. tipped in. Earlier owner's archival tape reinforcing to reverse of dustwrapper's top edge, else fine. This book contains the third and fourth chapters, "Expansion & exploration" and "Greed and graft". Accounts reproduced include those of Christopher Fryke, Father Guy Tachard, Johan Wilhelm Vogel, William Dampier, Francois Leguat, William Erle, and many others. .
