London, 1827. 25, [1] pp. Folio, stitched, untrimmed. Occasional light foxing, else quite clean. The Journal of Captain John Carnall, in the form of a "Diary of the treatment I have received at the Cape of Good Hope, on a charge of having aided in the escape of a person named Edwards, then about undergoing his sentence of transportation to New South Wales for writing Lord Charles Somerset a letter." One entry reads: "Monday, 20th September...Dreadful cries and flogging as usual at day-light...very ill; taking medicine; still in solitary confinement...horribly afraid. No light allowed in my cell.- Midnight." With excerpts from his Defense. Not located on OCLC.
