About This Item
New York: D. Appleton & Company, 1903. Hardcover. Good+. Publisher's orange cloth, ornately blindstamped on upper board and spine, gilt-stamped lettering on upper board and spine; small 8vo; pp. xxxii, 359, [2] (ads), plus frontispiece portrait and 3 plates (lacking 1). With a handwritten, signed letter (ALS) from Mrs. Stockton tipped to the front paste-down; dated 10 Dec 1905 and addressed to Mr. Salmon, she briefly mentions her move to Washington DC after her husband's death, and she discusses his autograph. With a "Memorial Sketch" by Mrs. Stockton, and a bibliography. Cloth rubbed and scuffed; spine tips and corners lightly bumped and frayed; some light foxing and dust-smudging along edges of text block, and margin of first and last few leaves. A bit shabby, but unique. Mrs. Stockton's letter is in excellent condition.
