About This Item

(Paris?): (S.n.), 1826. First edition. Published unbound. Attached with string. Untrimmed. In fine condition.. First edition. Published unbound. Attached with string. 32 p.

Report of the special commission for inspecting the distribution of the indemnity payed by Haiti for the former French settlers after gaining her independence. The members of commission were Pierre-Marc-Gaston de Lévis (1764-1830), marquis de Lally-Tollendal (1751-1830), Emmanuel de Pastoret (1755-1840), Timoléon de Cossé-Brissac (1775-1848) and the author of this report Édouard Mounier (1783-1843).

After the successful slave rebellion of Saint-Domingue which culminated in the elimination of slavery and the founding of the Republic of Haiti it took more than twenty years until the French ruler, King Charles X of France recognised the independence of the island in return of 150 million gold franc indemnity in April 1825. The sum was later reduced to 90 million in 1838.

Scarce, we could trace only one copy in institutional holdings, in Bibliothèque nationale de France.

Sabin 75134 (under the title: "Indemnite en faveur des Colons de Saint-Domingue: Rapport et resume faits a la Chambre des Pairs, par le baron Mounier". Not in the Haiti Collection of John Carter Brown Library.
