Full colour frontispiece of Cardiganshire from Space, plus 30 other b/w plates, 74 figures, 4 tables, 15 contributors. "This is the first volume to appear in the prestigious County History which is being prepared by the Cardiganshire Antiquarian Society. The completed History will consist of three scholarly and handsome volumes designed to present the history of the ancient County from the earliest times to the present day. This volume, for which the editors have brought together a team of eminent scholars, begins with the physical background of the County, its geology and geography and its flora and fauna, and traces the slow emergence of Man in prehistoric times. It reconstructs...the extent and character of the Roman occupation, and the routes by which the Romans came in pursuit of their military purposes and imperial designs. It traces the slow emergence of the ancient kingdom of Ceredigion, the nature of its economic & social organization & the growth of its political structures. Also in this volume the coming of Christianity, the origins of the churches, etc, are fully explored. The volume ends with the coming of the Normans. A unique feature is that it contains authoritative lists & inventories of the County's prehistoric & Roman remains, early Christian monuments & the 'finds' associated with them. Archaeologists and historians generally will find much to interest them in this fascinating volume on a hitherto neglected part of the country".
