About This Item
[Carnegie Hall] Typed Letters Signed (3) from Isaac Stern 1982-1987
Letters in fine condition. Previous folds. Each on cream colored Isaac Stern letterhead. Two leaves measure 8.5 x 6.5 inches; third leaf is 11 x 8.5 inches. Two signatures in felt; one in blue pen.
All three letters are addressed to Robert England of England Ltd. or England Consultants. The 1982 and 1987 notes refer to attendance at the Midsummer Encampment, the infamous annual gathering at Bohemian Grove in Muir Woods. The Grove, a 2700 enclave owned by the Bohemian Club, hosts its annual exclusive gathering each July. Stern writes in the 1982 letter, "I had occasion to see Dr. Kessinger in California and we discussed the possibility of our being at the Midsummer Encampment together in July."
The third letter dated December 20, 1986, refers to the reopening of Carnegie Hall. According to wikipedia, "In the 1960s, he [Stern] played a major role in saving New York City's Carnegie Hall from demolition, by organizing the Citizens' Committee to Save Carnegie Hall. Following the purchase of Carnegie Hall by New York City, the Carnegie Hall Corporation was formed, and Stern was chosen as its first president, a title he held until his death. Carnegie Hall later named its main auditorium in his honor." Stern notes in his letter, "we are delighted with the results which have surpassed our fondest expectations. It is the culmination of years of dreams and exhausting efforts...."
Three nice signed topical letters from the violin virtuoso and cultural icon, Isaac Stern.
