About This Item

W H Allen, London - first edition ISBN:0491009925 1972 Hardcover, 8¾" x 5½", with dust jacket Ours is an ex-library copy in transparent protective covering, with usual stamps, stickers, barcode, reinforced hinges and rear pockets. Book in GOOD condition Dark-brown cloth-bound boards with gold type to spine, frontispiece photographic portrait (signed by Caruso, 1902), 21 b&w photographic illustrations, bibliography, and index. Caruso's career was astonishing by any standard. One of twenty-one children, he was born in squalid poverty. His success was spectacular, and the time came when kings and emporers courted him. He commanded vast fees, and was adored by millions. He knew 64 operas by heart and spoke seven languages, including a delightful fractured English, but never read a book. His career was jam-packed with drama, personalities, and anecdotes. This biography shows him with and without his make-up.
