[Adelaide]: Robert Thomas and Co., Printers, Hindley-street (colophon at the foot of the last page), 1840. First Edition. Hardcover. Fair. [Adelaide], Robert Thomas and Co., Printers, Hindley-street (colophon at the foot of the last page), [circa 1840]. Octavo, 140 pages. Later half calf (lettered and ruled in gilt) and cloth; first and last pages discoloured and soiled; minor marginal loss to the top corner of the first leaf; old tissue-paper repair to the top margin of the last leaf; minor stains to the printed surface of one leaf; dampstains to the top margin of the first few leaves and the last 30 leaves (rarely impinging on the printed surface); minor signs of use and age; a decent copy. An apparently unrecorded compilation of accounts of the 1839 libel action, counter-action for wilful and corrupt perjury, and the counter-counter-action for libel involving George Milner Stephen, Colonial Secretary and Advocate General of South Australia, and brother-in-law of Governor John Hindmarsh. The various actions stemmed from perhaps the most infamous fraudulent property speculation in the early years of the colony of South Australia, which involved Stephen's large property, the Milner Estate, near the mouth of the Gawler River. In an attempt to artificially inflate the value of the property, Stephen placed a flurry of advertisements in South Australian newspapers (some apparently under pseudonyms), making false claims about the situation of the town, the frequency of transport and the quality of natural resources. His campaign initially paid off. In April 1839 Stephen boasted to Adelaide's governing elite and to the newspapers that he had sold half of the Estate to Captain William Allen and Captain John Ellis for the staggering price of £20,000, and that he valued the whole property at £40,000. The sale was soon announced in the 'South Australian Gazette and Colonial Register' of 13 April 1839. 'These gentlemen, in conjunction with Mr Stephen, intend to lay out a large sum in erecting buildings, saw-mills, &c. and are about to commence agricultural operations on an extensive scale forthwith. The demand for allotments in the town of Milner continues to increase. Mr Bensham, the agent, has sold nearly one fourth of the whole within the last three days'. It soon emerged that fewer than 20 of over 200 allotments had sold, and that the sale price was in fact £8000 for two thirds of the estate (see the 'South Australian Register', 23 May 1856, for a later summary). The affair became a scandal in the new colony, with extensive coverage of Stephen's subsequent defamation actions and his resulting trial for perjury. Robert Thomas, Government Printer, newspaper proprietor, and printer of this volume, was the successful defendant in the second libel case.

This fascinating exposé is drawn from the Supreme Court records, the 'Government Gazette,' and newspapers of the day (from May to September 1839). This appears to be a proof copy of a proposed publication, intended perhaps to capitalise on the public appetite for news about the trial. It is fully typeset, imposed and paginated, and the first leaf is signed 'B', suggesting that preliminaries (including a title page) were intended. We have not traced this work in the standard bibliographies or any Australian collection. Provenance: Robert Thomas (the printer); by descent.

Description:
Babbage was 'engineer, scientist and explorer ... son of Charles Babbage, Cambridge professor of mathematics [and the first computer pioneer], and his wife Georgina, sister of W.W. Whitmore, a founder of South Australia.... In 1856 Babbage was sent north to search for gold as far as the Flinders Ranges. He found none, but discovered the MacDonnell River, Blanchewater and Mount Hopeful. He was the first to dispel the current idea of the impassability of the Lake Torrens "horseshoe" ... [In late 1857 he was] appointed leader of a northern expedition. Babbage left in February 1858 to explore the country between Lakes Torrens and Gairdner, and further to the north and west. His concept of exploration was based on thorough survey, mapping and examination of the country, ideals with which Francis Dutton, commissioner of crown lands, agreed in his instructions and early correspondence. With cumbrous and ingenious equipment Babbage carried out the first part, hampered by bad terrain and lack of water. But he… Read More

Description:
The very fine portrait (visible image size 545 × 395 mm, in its original ornate gilt frame, external dimensions 740 × 595 mm) is exquisitely hand-painted and signed by the famous colonial photographer, Townsend Duryea (1823-1888). His original label is affixed to the paper backing on the verso of the frame ('T. Duryea, Artist Photographer, 66 and 68 King William Street, Adelaide'), and in our opinion, he has created a masterpiece as both artist and photographer with this work. James Hurtle Fisher commenced practice as a solicitor in London in 1816 and 'was drawn into the colonizing movement in 1835.... [He] was selected as resident commissioner, one of the most important offices under the South Australian Act ... second only to the governor'. Fisher 'left England in July 1836 with the governor's party in the "Buffalo", arriving on 28 December 1836 at Holdfast Bay, where the official oaths were administered, a proclamation was read and a ceremony marked the beginning of settlement. In January 1837… Read More

WINNER OF THE PEGASUS PRIZE FOR LITERATURE AND THE BOOKER PRIZE. Used. Very Good/Very Good unclipped original $17.95 dust jacket. Summary: "The Bone People, first published in 1984 by Spiral, New Zealand. About this book: The Bone People is an unusual story of love. It is unusual in the telling, the subject matter, and the form of love that the story depicts. This is in no way a romance; it is filled with violence, fear, and twisted emotions. At the story's core, however, are three people who struggle very hard to figure out what love is and how to find it. Hulme won New Zealand's Pegasus Prize for Literature (1984) for The Bone People. Then the book went on to win the prestigious Booker Prize (1985).

Captain Nicolas Baudin's early 19th-century voyage of scientific discovery to Australia is a little-known event in French and Australian history. Yet that voyage played an important part in the history of Australian and Pacific colonization, and in the long story of worldwide scientific exploration. Departing Le Havre in 1800, Baudin's expedition comprised two ships--the Naturaliste and the Géographe--and 238 men, including 22 scientists. For most of the next three-and-a half years they travelled along the western and southern coasts of Australia, charting the coastline and… Read More
