[Twickenham]: Strawberry Hill, 1763. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to (223 x 176mm). [4], 128pp., 14pp., 20pp., [10]. Including An Account of the Life and Works and List of Vertueís Works (paginated separately), with an index and a final advertisement leaf. Nine engraved portrait plates of important engravers: [1] Hoefnagle, [2] Robert Van Voerst, [3] William Faithorne, [4] Prince Rupert, [5] John Evelyn, [6] Warner Valliant, Vandrebanc, Francis Place, William Lodge, [7] Robert White, P. Vansomer, Isaac Becket, John Start, William Elder [8] Hamlet Winstanley, Dorigny, [9] George Vertue. Four plates carry the names of source-artists: V. Dyck, William Faithorne, Dobson, Richardson. All carry the names of their engravers: A. Bannerman or T. Chambars. Contemporary calf, expertly rebacked, compartments stamped in gilt with morocco lettering label, (lightlt toned, light marginal stains to title and prelims.; cover with few gouges, some wear). First Edition. Horace Walpole, Fourth Earl of Orford, author, politician, and connoisseur, was a principal commissioner of arts and literature on art. Walpoleís own Strawberry Hill printing press supported his intensive literary activity. Contemporary to this printing, Anecdotes of Painting in England was published (also collected by George Vertue). This volume was intended as volume V of ìAnecdotes of paintingî; vol. IV was not published until 1771.
