All carry the names of their engravers: A. Bannerman or T. Chambars. First Edition. Horace Walpole, Fourth Earl of Orford, author, politician, and connoisseur, was a principal commissioner of arts and literature on art. Walpoleís own Strawberry Hill printing press supported his intensive literary activity. Contemporary to this printing, Anecdotes of Painting in England was published (also collected by George Vertue). This volume was intended as volume V of ìAnecdotes of paintingî; vol. IV was not published until 1771.
