Full speckled calf, triple gilt frame around the boards, ornate flat spine, red morocco title label on the spine. Important collection of four works of Sanskrit scholarship and bibliography, dating from the early study of Sanskrit in Europe. The orientalists Alexandre Hamilton (1765-1824), Louis-Mathieu Langlès (1763-1824) and Antoine-Léonard de Chézy (1773-1832) were at the origin of the incorporation of Sanskrit into the university. Hamilton studied, after his stay in India, the Sanskrit manuscripts preserved in England and France; Langlès created the first chair of oriental languages in Paris and Chézy, on his side, was the first official teacher of Sanskrit in Europe. Outstanding copy proceeding from the library of Langlès, with his signature on the reverse of a guard leaf and several mlanuscript annotations in the table of content of the catalogue of manuscripts of the Bibliothèque Impériale, of which he was the author with Hamilton. Beautiful copy in its original binding.
