About This Item

London: Jonathan Cape. 1928. First edition, first printing. First edition, first printing. Publisher's original brown cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with a little bumping to the spine tips, the cloth bright and fresh. The contents, with a small ownership name in ink on the front free endpaper, offsetting to the endpapers and between pages 118-119 from a loosely laid in publisher's card, some spotting to the prelims and closed text block edge, are otherwise clean thoughout. Complete with the rubbed, nicked and creased dustwrapper which is significantly toned to the spine and the panel edges. Not price-clipped (6s on the front flap). Loosely inserted publisher's catalogue for Plays by Eugene O'Neill. Scarce in the dustwrapper. A collection of short stories set in Verga's native Sicily, translated and introduced by D. H. Lawrence. The eponymous story formed the basis for Pietro Mascagni's popular one-act opera of the same name. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request.
