Colour frontispiece, 7 colour plates, and 8 black and white. Contemporary green calf, gilt (unevenly faded to tan). First published in the Quarterley Review and then in book form in 1837. Apperley's "expert knowledge and social status made him an invaluable recruit to the sporting press of the time, and he may even be said to have created the role of gentleman hunting correspondent. Writing at first under various pseudonyms (Acastus, Eques, and A), he published his first article for the Sporting Magazine as Nimrod in January 1822 and he subsequently usually used that nom de plume. Publisher's catalog of "Books for the Country" on final 2 unpaginated pages. Circular embossed stamp on front free endpaper reading: W.H. Smith & Son Library, 186 Strand. Nimrod was the pseudonym of Charles James Apperley (1777-1843), an English sportsman and sporting writer. Frontispiece is a portrait (presumably of Apperley) engraved by E. Finden from a painting by D. Maclise. Title page has red border. In Fair+ Condition: loss at ends of spine; front joint partially separated; cover lightly rubbed and soiled; front free endpaper and pages up to first page of text detached but present; frontispiece detached for 4 cm. from lower edge; occasional light soiling; complete.

London: John Murray, 1837. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Alken, Henry. Octavo. 301 pages. Hardcover bound in 3/4 brown leather with marbled paper covered boards. All edges marbled. Binding is rubbed and soiled from handling. There is some bumping at boards, and the leather is scuffed in places. Five raised spine boards. Gilt decorations on spine. The gilt has rubbed off in places. Marbled endpapers. Handwritten inscriptions on the reverse of the second front flyleaf. A colour insignia bookplate is on the third front flyleaf, along with a handwritten inscription at the top of the page. The title page and frontispiece are quite toned. Text is foxed. There are 14 plates (including the portrait), collates complete. One of the plates is detached but present. The plates have foxing and have heavy browning about the edges. The Chase - The Melton Chase plate has had the sky portion hand coloured in blue.
