About This Item

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1980. First edition. Paperback. Narrow 4to bound in green printed wraps. An early state of this uncorrected proof, which contains the story "You Lay Down by Your Side," excised by the publisher from most copies. The published version of the book contained no mention of the story, and to our knowledge the story has not been published elsewhere in English. The title of the story is struck through in red pencil on the table of contents, and in one other place there is a sentence underlined in the same pencil. Quite scarce, and likely the first state of the proof; we've handled other copies of the proof which lacked the story, and this is the only copy of the proof we have seen with the story intact.

Some soiling and staining to the wraps and edges of the text block, 1/2" closed tear to front panel at head of spine, sticker remnant from first blank, and a pencilled note to first blank describing the proof contents; about very good.
