About This Item

Willard, Charles [self], 1967. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Aviation: Charles Willard, 2 ALS & signed United Cigar Trading Card. 1) 2 ALS (Autograph Letters Signed, meaning handwritten letters) from the '60s, in which historically significant early aviator Charles Forster Willard briefly gives opinions about who invented what in the early years of aviation. But for folds, both letters better than Very Good. Dated in August of 1967 and May of 1968, about ten years before his death in 1977 at age 94. Written on the obverses of two letters of inquiry from a hobbyist / historian. Mentioned are Curtiss, Wright, Cayley, Stringfellow, Boulton, Brookings. Approximately 8.5" x 11". Please note that the full scans on these two ALS are intentionally low-resolution at this time. 2) United Cigar Stores Co. vintage trading card, signed at the top by Charles Willard, showing Willard seated in "The Golden Flyer", as so stated by him in that inscription. Date (of the publication of the card by United Cigar) unknown to me, but would have had to have been after 1904 and before 1927. I'm not a trading card grader, though I would call this card Very Good as a guess. Please refer to scans. Willard was a Harvard graduate and race car driver who went on into early aviation, where he made his marl and became one of the better remembered pioneers in the field. He was a very early flying student of Glenn Curtiss, and later became a designer for Curtiss as well as chief engineer for Glenn Martin. In 1910, he won a prize in the Los Angeles Aviation meet, and later that same year he became the first person to fly over Los Angeles. A nice piece of Aviation, and American, history Leph
