Condition: Fair to good, covers and spine have general light shelfwear. Binding sound, although pages 55-58 are loose. Occasional light foxing to endpapers and within text. Previous owners bookplate on front pastedown together with inscription from the previous owner to a friend, dated 1953. 258pp. 8 b/w plates. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

Slight cracking to gutters causing binding to be loose, however pages remain attached. Pages and illustrations have light tanning and foxing throughout. Small tears to some page edges, text remains unaffected. Previous owner's inscription to half-title page. Boards have light shelf-wear with corner bumping. Slight crushing to spine ends. Water staining to front board.

Original publisher's light blue cloth (illustrated with fish), lettered dark blue at the spine and front cover. Illustrations (including frontispiece) taken from 'Child's play' and 'New child's play' - printed in sepia, reduced in size and reproduced by electrotyping.

Vellum has darkened. Page edges and end-papers browned and brittle. Hinges starting, interior nice. Creaks a bit when opening.

London: Elliot Stock, 1884 A very good copy of the 1st edition in full vellum binding with gilt titles and emblem to front board and spine. Page edges untrimmed. The vellum binding is sound and tight. There is some light marking to the boards - including a large spot on the front board. The spine has slight creasing and the front board has a slight warp at the top. Internally there is an ownership signature dated 1884 to the half title page. Contents are complete and very clean with occasional light spotting particularly to the top of the side margins. Endpapers with some light marking. The half title is browned as is the final blank. The last leaf has a design at the front and is unopened.

London: John Lane, The Bodley Head, 1908 A very good copy of Eleanor Vere Boyle's last work, inscribed by her to Lady Phillimore on February 4th, 1909. The inscription, which is on the front free endpaper reads 'For Lady Phillimore with EVB's Love'. The green cloth binding has gilt titles and a gilt peacock to the front board and spine. The boards are bright and clean with some light marking on the back board, which has a couple of small bubbles to the cloth at the top. The spine is slightly faded. Spine ends are pulled and there is light wear to corners. Top page edges gilted. Contents are complete and clean with black and white frontispiece and 7 further black and white plates by EVB. Publisher's catalogue at the rear. There is occasional foxing, for example at the beginning of the prologue and including the half title and title page. There is some spotting to the foredge which is occasionally noticeable internally.

Pages fine; no writing. Bind good; hinges intact. Features eight illustration plates displaying the grandeur of the ornately designed male peacock. This was the last work published by Eleanor Vere Boyle eight years prior to her death, a collection of twelve beautiful writings or belles-lettres, accompanied by the eight illustrations. She was born in Scotland on May 1, 1825 to Alexander Gordon of Ellon Castle, Aberdeenshire, descendant of the Duke of Ancaster. Chivers would execute his paintings on paper which was covered with a translucent skin to form the binding, The covers were then lightly tooled with gold. It is rare to find such a finely preserved fine binding. Signed by Chivers. In 'Days and Hours in a Garden', 19th century Scotish artist and writier, Eleanor Vere Boyle (1825 -1916) takes us through the months of the year, the cherry blossoms, the rooks, the wild ivy etc. etc., reminiscent of a modest walled-garden 'Walden' by Thoreau.
