London: Addey & Co, Old Bond Street, 1851. Seventeen pages, drawings with printed manuscript text, printed on one side of the page only, interleaved with blank pages, a little light foxing and age-toning, large slim 8vo, later blue cloth with gilt lettering and lining, very slightly worn. [The extremely rare true first edition. The text was taken by E.V.B from an old copy of Halliwell's Nursery Rhymes. Apparently published at Christmas 1851, but often attributed to 1852. It is reputedly the first book to have illustrations of nursery rhymes, but this seems a little unlikely ? The first title page has a large and heavy inscription - "To Sybil Sassoon from Louise Boyle", and in the same hand "The Hon Mrs Richard Boyle" is written beneath E.V.B. There is an accompanying letter from Louise Boyle, gifting it to Sybil Sassoon, and apologising for the fact that she has had to re-bind it.]. First Edition. Cloth. Good.

London: Elliot Stock, 1898. A superb example of a vellucent binding. Cedric Chivers (1853 -1929) of Bath revived the technique of painting under vellum. Chivers would execute his paintings on paper which was covered with a translucent skin to form the binding, The covers were then lightly tooled with gold. It is rare to find such a finely preserved fine binding. Signed by Chivers. In 'Days and Hours in a Garden', 19th century Scotish artist and writier, Eleanor Vere Boyle (1825 -1916) takes us through the months of the year, the cherry blossoms, the rooks, the wild ivy etc. etc., reminiscent of a modest walled-garden 'Walden' by Thoreau. A Note From Fred Rogers: A child's first visit with a pediatrician usually comes soon after birth. It may be months or even years later, though, that a child first shows fear about going to see a doctor. The worry of an injection or some other unfamiliar medical procedure can trigger that fear. It can also appear because another family member may be feeling medical anxieties. And, of course, new body awareness and needs for privacy develop naturally in children's early years, so all these feelings can make it very hard for them to let doctors investigate the workings of… Read More
