About This Item

New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1967. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. First American edition. Translated from the German by Michael Hamburger, Christopher Holme, Ruth and Matthew Mead, and Michael Roloff. Contains both the original German and English translation of the poems but only the English translation of the play, *Eli*. Owner bookplate on the front pastedown, else fine in a near fine dust jacket with a small nick on the front panel, very light edgewear, and some rubbing. The bookplate is that of American bassoonist, Sol Schoenbach featuring what appears to be an illustration of a well-dressed monkey playing a bassoon. An award winning musician, Schoenbach was the principle bassoonist for the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1937 to 1957.
