London: Heinemann, 1922. A first edition, first printing published by Heinemann in 1922. A near fine book without inscriptions. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Inscribed 'For Sydney Schiff/from W. Somerset Maugham/in recollection of a pleasant/hour/. Spotting to the front endpaper. In the rare original dust wrapper showing 10/6 to the spine as required. Wear to the corners. A little wear to the spine tips. In a custom-made slipcase. Rare.
Synopsis
W. Somerset Maugham was born in Paris in 1874. He trained as a doctor in London where he started writing his first novels. In 1926 he bought a house in Cap Ferrat, France, which was to become a meeting place for a number of writers, artists and politicians. He died in 1965.
