About This Item

New York; (1948): Harper and Brothers. First Edition. `. Octavo. 256pp., Inscribed by the author. Here, the author describes the thirteen views of how the solvent of Christian practice may be applied to "America's number one problem" race relations. William Stuart Nelson (1895-1977) was an expert on nonviolence, a civil rights activist, and university president. In 1925 he became a professor of religion at Howard University. In 1931 he became the first African American president of Shaw University. In 1959, during the civil rights movement, he spoke at the Institute on Nonviolence and Social Change. In 1962 he spoke at the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. He later participated in the Selma to Montgomery March in 1965. Bound in brown cloth, spine lettering gilt, corners only lightly bumped, in unclipped dust jacket with toning some light chipping along upper edge, spine faded, a few tiny stains (droplets) to front panel. Inscribed by the author to Noel Sullivan, a concert singer and philanthropist who was also greatly interested in the welfare of Negroes and many became close personal friends. He supported Langston Hughes, Marian Anderson, William Lawrence and a young African American singer, Marcus Hall. A very good copy.
